Does the Bible Allow Women of the Church to Teach Men?

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By Clyde Annach The First Baptist Church of Watertown NY has created a controversy in the media with its firing of a long time Sunday school teacher on the grounds that she is a women. The mainstream media is of course all over the gender rights aspect of this story. My question is, does First Baptist Church have it right? Does the Bible teach that women are not to teach men as a guide line to be followed by all churches or was this teaching meant only for the church at Ephesus? The Ephesian Church at the time of Paul’s instructions to Timothy was ripe with false teachers and heresies. Timothy was to restrain (1 Tim 1:3) these false teachers on the grounds that they taught out of vain self interests (1 Tim 6:3-4) As I urged you when I went into Macedonia, stay there in Ephesus so that you may command certain men not to teach false doctrines any longer 1 Tim 1:3 (NIV) If anyone teaches false doctrines and does not agree to the sound instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching, he is conceited and understands nothing. He has an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions 1 Tim 6:3-4 (NIV) Paul in his second letter to Timothy makes a point of saying some of the women of the church were being swayed by these false teachers. (2 Tim 3:6-9) They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over weak-willed women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, always learning but never able to acknowledge the truth. Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these men oppose the truthmen of depraved minds, who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected. But they will not get very far because, as in the case of those men, their folly will be clear to everyone. 2 Tim 3:6-9 (NIV) He includes a sanction against younger women of the church who had corrupted their witness for the sake of earthly things. (1 Tim 5:11-15) As for younger widows, do not put them on such a list. For when their sensual desires overcome their dedication to Christ, they want to marry. Thus they bring judgment on themselves, because they have broken their first pledge. Besides, they get into the habit of being idle and going about from house to house. And not only do they become idlers, but also gossips and busybodies, saying things they ought not to. So I counsel younger widows to marry, to have children, to manage their homes and to give the enemy no opportunity for slander. Some have in fact already turned away to follow Satan. 1 Tim 5:11-15 (NIV) Understanding both of these facts also explains Paul’s call for women of the Ephesian church to silence. (1 Tim 2:11) A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. 1 Tim 2:11 (NIV) Comparing the typical first century woman with the women of today from an educational background, we can easily see a cultural trend. The women of today are far better educated, thus better equipped to teach. . Allowing the Bible to interrupt itself we see instances of women teaching men (Acts 18:26) and even prophesying. (1 Cor 11:5) and (Acts 21:8-9) He began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they invited him to their home and explained to him the way of God more adequately. Acts 18:26 (NIV) And every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her headit is just as though her head were shaved. 1 Cor 11:5 (NIV) Leaving the next day, we reached Caesarea and stayed at the house of Philip the evangelist, one of the Seven. He had four unmarried daughters who prophesied. Acts 21:8-9 (NIV) The Bible is clear on the issue of women teaching, even teaching men. They are allowed to teach, no required if thus gifted to teach, even men. 1 Timothy 2:12 then would be for the Ephesian Church at that time and not a precedence for time immemorial. Be Cautious Of Websites Offering Free Ringtones

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Ian_E._Wright]Ian E. Wright It seems everybody these days is talking about new cell phones from Motorola’s RAZR to Samsung’s new Blackjack to Apple’s new iPhone (or whatever it will end being called). In addition to having the latest cell phones, people also seem to want to have the latest ringtones to go along with it. The problem is that buying and downloading ringtones is expensive with most websites and/or cell phone carriers charging $1 or more per download. If you download many ringtones I am sure you already know that it can quickly add up. Even for people who only occasionally download them it can still be a minor annoyance. So, some rather genius websites have sprung up recently that offer to combine two of people’s favorite things: ringtones and free stuff. Thus, I am sure you have probably seen many websites offering free ringtones, but you are probably unsure if they are the real deal or not. Like most things in life that seem too good to be true, free ringtones are, but that does not mean all free ringtone offers are created equal. However, before I explain any farther I should clarify one very import point about ringtone deals offered in the United States. Due to recent legal cases in the US, most websites no longer use the term free, when advertising ringtone offers. Instead they will use the term bonus or complimentary ringtones instead. You should however be aware that any websites claiming to give “free ringtones”, “bonus ringtones” or “complimentary ringtones” are all essentially offering the same thing. For the vast majority of these websites you will only be able to get your “free” ringtone” after you sing-up (often unknowingly) for some sort of subscription service for your cell phone. You will then be charged a monthly fee to get “free bonus content,” most often more ringtones. In some cases these deals can actually be good for people who want to download a lot of ringtones to their phone. The problem is most people don’t want or need to download 10 or 20 ringtones per month. Thus, you end paying for a service you don’t need. There may be some good news though if you are looking to download free ringtones from the internet. Some of the services will give you a free trial period before they will start charging you. In theory then, you could download the ringtones and then cancel your service before you have paid a cent to the company. However, I would be extremely cautious if you try to do this because these companies are not known as being the most straightforward operators. I personally think it is a little too risky but if you want to try it you may be able to get a bunch of ringtones for free. Therefore, getting free ringtones is possible, at least in theory, but probably not a good idea in practice. Websites claiming to offer free, bonus or complimentary ringtones are more often than not misleading, since they try to get you to sign up for a monthly service you probably don’t want without telling you explicitly. Exercise caution and you will save yourself many headaches in the long run. Ian Wright is a recent university graduate who knows the value of getting things for free. Disability Hearings

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

By Timothy Moore Disability hearings are fairly informal events. Usually, such hearings are conducted at hearing offices (not a courtroom) where the only people present include the Judge (an ALJ, or administrative law judge), the claimant, the claimant’s representative—if they have chosen to retain one—and medical experts chosen by the Judge. AlJ hearings, as they are commonly known, usually last no more than an hour and sometimes only take 15 minutes. From any standpoint, this is not an extraordinary amount of time. Nevertheless, the time in which it takes to hold a hearing is of paramount importance to the person trying to win their disability benefits. As very many claimants for disability benefits discover, winning a claim can make the difference between having a stable monthly income or living a life of uncertainty as to what will happen next. It can even make the difference between having a home and being homeless. It is not at all uncommon to find, when a case has dragged on for too long, that a claimant is being threatened with eviction from their home or foreclosure on their property. The disability hearing before a judge is typically the single most important event that will occur in the disability process. It is a one hour event that will make or break a case. And for this reason, it should be prepared for properly. Unfortunately, 99% of all claimants will not have the skills or knowledge necessary to properly prepare—AND WIN—a case. Therefore, even though it may not be absolutely necessary to have a representative before the hearing level (for example, at the initial claim and reconsideration levels) it is vital to have representation at the time of the hearing. Here are some things to keep in mind if it looks as though you will have to go to a hearing: 1. go to the hearing. Believe it or not, some people don’t attend their own hearings. Obviously, this is a huge mistake and you should not expect a judge to give you full consideration if you don’t show up at your own hearing. 2. Don’t be late for your ssd or ssi hearing. This is something that most judges have little tolerance for. And the same reasoning applies: if you can’t be on time for your own disability hearing, the judge can only conclude that it is notthat important to you. 3. Be prepared. That is, be sure either you or your disability advocate has gotten and submitted to the judge copies of all your recent medical records. In most cases, you can’t win disability benefits without all the records, especially the most recent records being submitted. Follow these tips and you can maximize your chance of being successful on a disability benefits claims. Increase Your Profits Through Customer Loyalty

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

By Jason Morris The job of convincing your existing customers to spend higher and more often can be an extremely tough task. There are many ways of achieving customer loyalty. It can be far more profitable to market existing and new products to an established customer base, than to try and attract new buyers. Offering incentives such as: loyalty discounts, increased order discounts, attractive credit terms, bonuses and dedicated account managers are just a few tried and tested methods for maintaining and increasing customer loyalty. Never forget that it costs your business far more to attract new customers, than it does to market to your existing customer base. In fact, research shows that in some cases it can cost up to fifteen times more to attract new customers, than it does to keep existing ones. So it really does pay to look after your existing loyal customers, strive to meet, and even exceed all their needs, however demanding. Remember the phrase the customer is always right. Offering a cheap product is not the only reason loyal customers come back to you again and again. There are other factors such as: service, knowledge and professionalism to be taken into account, as well as price. You have to give your customers as many reasons as possible to stay loyal to your company. Having the cheapest price for a given product or service is not always the answer some people think it is. In fact many customers may perceive that a cheaper selling price indicates an inferior product or service. Differentiate between your product and that of your competitors as much as possible, and focus on why your service is better than that of your competitors. In all your marketing efforts, whether to existing or new customers, consider the following factors: 1. Value for money - ensure that your customers know they are getting good value for their money. 2. Quality - offer the best quality products possible for the price you intend to charge. 3. Company image - handle all enquiries professionally and ensure that staff knowledge and training is up to date. 4. Turn around - offer the best order turnaround you can. You could offer express delivery for an extra charge, or even waiver the delivery charge on high value orders. By concentrating on all of the above factors, a good customer relationship can be built right from the very first contact and then maintained for a long lasting and profitable partnership. Working as a “Knowledge Worker” in the Information Age

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

By Peter Garas The old adages: “It’s not what you know, but who you know” and “High Tech, High Touch” could be the mottos of knowledge workers in the 21st Century. Never before in the history of the world has both networking and interpersonal communication been potentially easier, broader, more wide-spread and paradoxically, more difficult. The access to people and information in the information age is without parallel in history. The same technology which has enabled this to happen, has also reduced the time between communications from weeks to seconds. There is simply no officially available time within which to conduct the communications on which networking and interpersonal contacts depend. The time that people used to spend thinking and crafting their communications and interacting is now at a premium. While the volume of communications has expanded exponentially so too has, what I can only refer to as ‘noise’. Noise, being communications whose content is usually less than useful and in many nstances banal and not useful at all. Most of what appears in the journals, in public forums and in discussions describes new forms of work place organisation that assume solid support from the institution in which they form. Coherent groups which used to be called “self interest” groups and are now re-badged and called “communities of interest” or “expert groups” or ‘learning communities” or ‘quality circles” or “virtual teams” or “communities of practice”. Groups which do receive official encouragement and institutional support are usually not only unsuccessful, but in many instances, actively resented by the participants who are often “selected” by their senior management colleagues to attend. The resentment appears to be based on the fact that the individual has not self selected the people with whom he/she would like to communicate, this choice is made for him/her by management. Generally there is: no assessment about whether the person is the ‘right person’ for the discussion and/or topic under discussion; no attempt to undertake any ice breaker exercises when the groups first meet to try and ensure that there is a sufficient and necessary breakdown of the interpersonal barriers to communication; and no attempt to realise or rationalise the differing political agendas that each individual has been sent to present to the meeting by his/her administrative supervisor. The means by which these groups are set up and managed, presents a barrier to its success. This is generally not acknowledged by the management that keeps on setting up these groups, usually because they have read a little in the literature and skimmed the information, found a good idea and then without in depth knowledge about what they are doing, launched their next management ‘fad’. It is interesting to observe, by way of contrast, that those groups that self create and self moderate and do NOT include the management layer at all within their constructs, seem to do very well and achieve a lot. There is however a downside which is a period during which the original purpose of the gathering has been achieved and the group struggles to find a new ‘raison d’tre’ to continue because they value the interactions, the mutual upports and the ‘tick tacking’ discussions which add value to each person’s understanding by leveraging the understanding and/or perceptions of the others in the group. Most often than not, this fails and the group engages in a process that is like ’swirling’. It disbands, members keep their contacts alive and when a new reason for meeting emerges then some of the original group reforms involving others in the group as their interests and/or expertise comes to bear. The work which actually takes place behind the scenes to maintain contact and to keep supporting each other is intensive, hidden and generally not reported in any way within existing reporting structures or performance reporting tools. It can take up at least 1/3 of a working day. How it is factored into information lodged within tool suites that attempt to record work to funded projects is one of the most well kept secrets used by most staff. The reports that these groups make to management, with their usually innovative and practical suggestions are probably the best form of intelligence the organisation could harvest. There is unfortunately serious resistance from the senior management layer to receiving and considering the information, because it is perceived as having come from what are described as ‘feral’ groups within the organisation. Cynics in the work place usually ascribe this reaction to senior managers being miffed that they cannot claim kudos from the work because they did not even know it was happening. There are companies around the world who reward and indeed fund ‘feral’ behaviour. One company for example has created the ‘thief of the year’ award. It is given the person who can find something in the public domain which he/she then leverages to substantially improve the corporate bottom line. The same company also funds its staff to go off line and develop a productive idea at full pay for a period of six months. If they succeed then they are rewarded and the company gets the benefit of their work. If they fail then they are sacked or at minimum placed into work situations where their independence is considerably constrained for an extended period. This usually puts the intrapreneur on his her mettle and forces a risk management approach to the innovation cycle before choosing to try out that idea and increases the pressure to succeed once the choice has been made. The reality for most workers is that the many manifestations of organisational change - downsizing, outsourcing, merging, splitting, acquiring, partnering, and the constant redrawing of internal boundaries, responsibilities and organisational charts leads to situations in which it is increasingly difficult for workers to turn to established role based structures in their organisations when they need labour or information. It is in these conditions that workers leverage their own personal networks rather than relying on unstable and weakening organisation charts. Workers are empowered only if they are successful at creating and maintaining their own personal social networks. The work of networking really is ‘invisible work’ which is not accounted for in workflow diagrams or performance evaluations. In the past, employees worked for relatively long periods in ‘communities of practice’ (Wenger, 1988) within which they built up expertise in the details of their jobs. “Research on communities of practice has documented a number of important characteristics of this style of work: workers operated within clearly defined organizational and social roles, they were highly familiar with one another and shared considerable social, cultural and organizational knowledge that served as a backdrop for work and interaction. Workers were generally, (but not always) co-located, making it possible to have frequent interpersonal communications that contributed to the creation of shared knowledge, and facilitated the smooth execution of work tasks.” (Kraut et al., 1993; Whittaker et al., 1994; Nardi and Engestrm, 1999) - Quoted in “It’s Not What You Know, It’s Who You Know: Work in the Information Age.” Nardi, Bonnie A.; Whittaker, Steve; Schwarz, Heinrich 2001 www.firstmonday.dk Recent management literature has documented that these working conditions are rapidly becoming obsolete. One of the consequences of these organisational and technical changes is that in many companies and organisations operations are conducted in an increasingly ‘distributed’ manner - i.e. where the workers, contractors, consultants, and important contacts can be distributed across the organisation and indeed the world. In this sort of environment, workers experience stresses such as: remembering who is in the network; knowing what people in the network are currently doing; where they are located; choices among the many forms of media means to communicate effectively with people; being mindful to ‘keep in touch’ with contacts who may prove useful in the near or distant future. In contrast to the personal network view, the bulk of the management literature on work place organisation reflects a team based approach. This literature generically seems to assume that workers go about their business in teams with clearly defined and stable roles, functions and responsibilities. In much the same way, there is a further assumption that organisations have predictable, stable structures. In listening to people in at least one large Commonwealth organisation both of these assumptions are invalid. Other researchers report similar viewpoints in many other bureaucracies, for example: Fisher and Fisher, 1998; Lloyd and Boyle 1998, Jarvenapaa and Leidner, 1999, Mark, Grudin and Poltrock, 1999. In this brief overview what is being suggested is that management groups re-appraise their directions and consider whether their official structures are delivering the outcomes which were predicted and/or imagined and then explore whether the vitality of unleashing and supporting underground, feral or more ‘neural’ networks offer a better direction. How to Rescue and Sustain a Long Distance Relationship

Monday, February 25th, 2008

By Michael Douglas There are lots of things that one must do and lots that one must not do in order to rescue and sustain a long-distance relationship. Below is some advice that may look simple but when it comes to the actual execution, it may take more effort than you think. Establish an effective communication channel Most people will think that the telephone is the most convenient mode of communication, but there are other means of communication that help keep in touch and say things you might not say over the phone. Instant messenger, emails, VOIP phone and conventional mails can be very effective if you know how to use them. Each of the channels has its own advantages and disadvantages and therefore you must start to explore each of them. Plan to meet each other There is nothing more important than planning to meet each other at intervals throughout your long distance relationship. If you think you can sustain the relationship on patience and daily chats, it doesn’t happen. It’s also a sign of commitment if you take the trouble of actually visiting your partner or better, paying them a surprise visit. Find a hobby that you can both share By finding and sticking to a common hobby, both of you will have something to discuss and work on throughout your long distance relationship. Finding something to do online can be quite interesting. Surprise your partner Occasionally surprise you partner with cards, gifts, letters and flowers when they least expect it. Put your imagination to use and your partner will be sure to love your efforts to keep them happy. Capture and share that interesting moment You can always capture some interesting moment of yours by exchanging photos, video clips and as well as audio recording. This will keep your partner informed on what has happened in your life despite the physical distance. Easy Pond Algae Control the Ecologically Safe Way

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

By Doug Green Algae control in ponds is fairly straightforward. If we ignore the initial spring burst of green water that tells us the pond is coming alive, we make the first good step. However if the green persists, it tells us there is an imbalance in the pond ecology. The solution to that is to fix the imbalance. While some pond keepers would have you chuck in some chemicals, the reality is these are merely band-aids and wont solve the problem, theyll only mask it. If you want to solve the problem consider the sources of the problem. Many ponds have too many fish in them. At one inch of fish per one square foot of pond surface, you can either have three big ones at 10-inch length or 30 little ones at one-inch length. (note that 3 ten-inch fish will likely give you 100 one-inch fish every year) If you have a greatere fish population than this, understand two things are happening. The first is the pool ecology is being upset because of too high a level of fish excreted waste and high fish populations are likely eating the oxygenating plants that deal with this excretion waste material. The real solution is to lower the fish population. I note if you have fish and are feeding them, the other recommendation is to stop feeding or to drastically reduce your feeding. Excess food creates excess waste which in turn creates green pond water. The second solution is to increase the oxygenating plant level. A rule of thumb for doing this is to add one bunch (10 stems or so) of a floating oxygenator plant such anacharis for every 3 square feet of pond surface. Reducing the fish population and adding the oxygenators will clean up the algae in few days. If you add oxygenators without reducing the fish population, the fish will likely eat the plants and the green pond water will not go away. Understand there is not magic bullet here. You have to get that ecology in balance and the way to do that is to follow a few simple rules to control fish and plant populations. The two thumb rules above will solve most algae problems. Acupuncture - Don’t Be Afraid Of Needles

Saturday, February 16th, 2008

By Michael Russell Lots of times, how people deal with an ailment, depends on their incomes. People with plenty of money may go visit the doctor whenever their bodies feel abnormal. People with very little money will probably wait until an ailment becomes a major problem before they think about visiting a doctor. The medical and drug industries are very lucrative and for the most part, they work hand and hand. Neither industry would like it, if their patients found other ways to deal with their health problems. There have been quite a few alternative medicines, offered to the public, over the years, but one of the oldest is acupuncture. Acupuncture is a technique used to heal the body, by inserting and adjusting needles, into specific acupuncture points. The theory behind acupuncture is to let out excess energy or blood, by making holes in the body along certain pathways, called meridians. Sometimes it’s required to let out blood and not energy; while other times, the energy gets let out and not blood. There is an assumption, that diseases enter the body, through the skin. So, if a needle can be inserted into the body, at the same level of the disease, then the disease could be let out. Acupuncture started in China, more than 2000 years ago. Because of improved communications, Chinese medicine made its way into Japan, during the 6th century. In the 17th century, Sugiyama created the insertion tube, which is the tube that needles are inserted through. Acupuncture reached the West, in the early 1900s, by way of France. By 1950, acupuncture was known all over Europe, but it wasn’t until the 1970s, that America started to recognize it. The first acupuncture clinic, opened in Washington, D.C., in 1972. Acupuncture can help treat a lot of different illnesses by relieving the pain associated with the illness. Some of the conditions that can benefit from acupuncture are, menopause, diarrhoea, chronic pain, anxiety and high blood pressure. Acupuncture may not apply to all problems, so people need to make sure their illness will benefit from the treatment. Also, breast implants, pregnancy, a pacemaker and drugs, may increase the danger of using acupuncture. Although acupuncture has been an accepted form of treatment, for many years, it still involves a certain amount of risks. A hematoma or nerve damage could occur, if the wrong body parts are punctured. Brain damage or stroke is possible, with deep needling at the base of the skull. If needles aren’t properly sterilized, then diseases could be transferred. Side effects from using acupuncture, are actually considered lower than using conventional treatments, but it’s important that the public knows that there are risks to consider before they choose acupuncture. Acupuncture was not a widely accepted treatment, when it began. It took many years for people to even consider it as a form of medicine. Although medicine has made many advances over the years, there’s still a market for non-conventional treatments. Acupuncture has proven its effectiveness over the years and now, many people gladly choose acupuncture over conventional treatments.
