Ayurveda, India’s Science of Life, Health and Longevity

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

By Vishnu Dass Ayurveda is India’s ancient science life, health, and longevity. It is thought of by many scholars to be the oldest form of health care in the world. It originated in India over 5000 years ago, and was taught for thousands of years in an oral tradition from accomplished masters to their disciples. The purpose of Ayurveda is to heal, to maintain a high quality of life, and to increase the longevity of the individual. It is an art of daily living that has evolved from practical, philosophical, and spiritual insight. Even though they have been used for thousands of years, Ayurvedic principles have never changed, since they derive from universal laws of nature that are eternally true. In Sanskrit, Ayurveda means the “Science of Life.” Life is the integration of body, mind and consciousness. Ayurveda places great emphasis on prevention and encourages the maintenance of health through diet, lifestyle, yoga and meditation practice, the use of herbs, as well as cleansing and and rejuvenating therapies (panchakarma, abhyanga, shirodhara, nadi swedana, etc.) Ayurveda is a science of self-understanding. By understanding our own unique nature or constitution we can begin to understand how we interact with our environment and thus make choices that will lead us toward greater health. Ayurveda defines disease as the natural end result of living out of harmony with our original constitution. Therefore, the Ayurvedic approach is very individualized, since the path to optimal health is different for each person, depending upon their unique constitution or prakruti. The Ayurvedic system believes that the individuals constitution (prakruti) is recorded at the time of conception as a genetic code that can be expressed physically and mentally as disease proneness and emotional response. This constitution is determined by vata, pitta and kapha, which are the three main doshas, or psycho-physiological functional principles in Ayurveda. They govern the individuals response to changes and they promote the disease process when out of balance. Many factors, both internal and external, can disturb this balance and bring about changes in the original constitution that may lead to disorders and disease. Some of these factors include emotional and physical stresses, improper food combinations and choices, physical trauma, or seasonal and weather changes. Once we understand how these factors affect us on a constitutional level, we can take appropriate actions to nullify or minimize their effects and eliminate the causes of imbalance. The aim is to understand the nature and structure of disorder, so we can re-establish order to gain control over our health and well being. The science of understanding our constitution is the science of tridosha. Tridosha defines the three fundamental doshas or principles that govern the function of our bodies on the physical, mental, and emotional levels. Each individual has a unique balance of all three of these energies. These principles can be related to the basic biology of the body. Energy is required to create movement so that fluids and nutrients get to the cells, enabling the body to function. Energy is also necessary to metabolize the nutrients in the cells and is utilized to lubricate and maintain cellular structure. Vata is the energy of movement; pitta is the energy of transformation, digestion or metabolism; and kapha is the energy of lubrication and structure. Everyone has the qualities of vata, pitta and kapha, but one is usually primary or predominant, one is secondary and the third is usually the least predominant. Vata is the subtle energy associated with movement. It governs respiration, circulation, and elimination, as well as the pulsation of the heart and motor neuron impulses. Vata is very much like the wind it is light, cool, dry and mobile. People with a vata nature experience more of these qualities. Their bodies tend to be light, their bones thin, and their skin and hair dry. They often move and speak quickly. They tend to be talkative, enthusiastic, creative, flexible, and energetic. When aggravated, vata can cause confusion, insomnia, flatulence, constipation, weight loss, tremors, spasms, asthma, rheumatoid and osteoarthritis, as well as many neurological and immunological problems. Pitta represents the fire element in the body. It governs digestion, absorption, assimilation, nutrition, metabolism, and body temperature. Pitta tends to be hot, sharp, and penetrating. It is also somewhat volatile and oily. People with a pitta nature reflect these qualities. They tend to feel warm, have somewhat oily skin, penetrating eyes, and sharp features. They tend to have moderate weight and good musculature. They tend to be highly focused, competitive, capable, courageous, energetic, and clear communicators who get right to the point. They can however become overly intense and speak with a sharp tongue. Pitta disorders include diarrhea, infections, hyperacidity, ulcers, skin eruptions, chronic fatigue, Crohns disease, colitis, liver, spleen, and blood ailments, as well as numerous inflammatory problems. Kapha is the energy that forms the bodys structure and provides the cohesion that holds the cells together. Kapha supplies the water for all bodily parts and systems. It lubricates joints, moisturizes the skin, and maintains immunity. Kapha tends to be cool, moist, stable, and heavy. In the body these qualities manifest as dense, heavy bones; lustrous, supple skin; low metabolism and large, stocky frames. In addition, those with a kapha nature tend to feel cool. The heavy, stable nature of kapha reflects in a stable personality, not prone to quick fluctuations. When out of balance, kapha individuals are prone to gaining weight and tend to accumulate mucous. Kapha can also cause obesity, high cholesterol, diabetes, depression, edema, asthma, tumors, and a variety of congestive problems. Ayurveda also states that like increases like. For example, the summer has attributes similar to those of pitta hot, liquid, light, mobile, and penetrating. Therefore, in the summer pitta in the body tends to be increased. Vata is light, subtle, dry, mobile, rough, and cold. So in the fall, which also exhibits these attributes, vata will tend to be increased in the body. Kapha is liquid, heavy, cold, sticky, and cloudy. In the winter, when these characteristics predominate in the external environment, internal kapha tends to be increased. The constitution of an individual is a dynamic force, and vata, pitta, and kapha are dynamic energies that will change and be affected by the environment and other factors in various ways. An Ayurvedic regime and lifestyle, along with dinacharya routines, will enable the individual to gain more awareness and control over how those factors can be diminished or nullified, so as to improve and maintain optimal health and well being. From the time of birth until death, the body is engaged in maintaining life. Vata, pitta and kapha play an important role in the maintenance of cellular health and longevity. Kapha maintains longevity on the cellular level. Pitta governs digestion and nutrition. Vata, which is closely related to the life energy (or prana), governs all life functions. Ayurveda offers different therapies that may support the individuals constitutional harmony at all levels, while promoting cellular rejuvenation and overall vitality and immunity. The key to optimal health is to help the body eliminate toxins and reestablish the constitutional balance of the doshas. For such purpose, Ayurveda offers diet and lifestyle guidelines, herbal preparations, and cleansing and rejuvenating programs such as panchakarma and vata management therapies. High Risk Personal Loans

Monday, July 30th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Steve_C_Clark]Steve C Clark Sometimes, simply everything goes wrong. You may be having a bad credit history and not have anything to be placed as a collateral to secure a loan for you. In the vocabulary of the lenders, this situation is said to be a high risk situation and if you require a personal loan in such a situation, you are said to require a high risk personal loan. Though the terms which you will be able to bargain for a loan in such a state might be tough and steep, possibly going for a loan and getting out of such a situation at slightly higher rates is really worth it. Credit history is not always under the control of an individual. It might be bad just because the individual has no history of borrowing and it might also be bad because the only loan you took, you were not regular about repaying. Also, requirements may be sudden and urgent. They may just appear whether you have something or not to be placed as the collateral. When you look at the options to borrow in such a situation, they may appear to charge a slightly higher rate of interest than if you had come with the security of a collateral. It is also slightly justifiable on the part of the lender to ask for a slightly higher rate because the money lent is actually under a high risk and the borrower given his fragile financial standing, in an unfortunate situation may not be able to repay it. Stiff competition in the lending industry have brought these rates lower and affordable though. It is possible to obtain a high risk loan even if you do not have a home, any other collateral or a good credit history. It is normally worthwhile to go for these loans since they would bail you out of a financial emergency and bring you back on your feet. If you plan your finances well, you may also be able to pay this back in time and do wonders to your financial health. Another reason why you should go for such a loan is that if you are able to pay it back in time and be regular with the repayments, your credit history will dramatically improve. The next time you are in some requirement and you go shopping for a loan, it would be easy for you to obtain it at lower rates. It is a suggestion worth considering since no one can claim that one would never be in a financial situation to require a loan. If you come out of it this time and improve your credentials, it will be good for you in all further situations to come. The point to note here is that you must plan your finances such that you do not miss on repayments this time around. A further spoil in the credit ratings would mean that obtaining any future loan would be difficult for you. Also, such loans are available for slightly lower amounts and repayment periods than the secured loans would have been the exact amount and period depend on your job or your repayment ability otherwise. Fly Fishing Schools

Sunday, July 29th, 2007

By Ken Marlborough They say that some things are best learned through experience. They say that no matter how much you read about a certain topic or how often you watch other people do it, you will never really learn the right way unless you get to try yourself. Can this be applied to learning how to fly fish? Well, according to fly fishing schools, you can never really learn too much about any subject. They say that going to school and acquiring the guidance of skilled instructors is accepted as the quickest and most efficient way to learn how to fly fish. For most people, learning consists of different stages. You can never learn everything in just one day. This is perhaps why fly fishing schools are becoming popular nowadays. It is not just because fly fishing is quite difficult to learn, but because you need to be prepared and trained if you want to become an expert fly fisher. There are many fly fishing lessons that you can learn in a fly fishing school. They include (a) learning to cast well, as this is the most important part of catching fish; (b) spey casting, where you can learn the basics of the roll, switch, single spey, and double spey casts using single- or double-handed rods; (c) advanced spey casting; (d) under-hand spey casting that generates very tight loops that travel great distances in very little effort; and even (e) fly fishing PhD classes. Fly fishing schools have very strict policies. You have to stick to an exact schedule and curriculum. Disruptions during the lesson should be kept to a minimum. You also have to be organized and ready to perform the day’s tasks. The payments depend on the number of classes that you want to take. Usually, these schools do not allow refunds after 60 days prior to the class date unless there is another student who will sign up to take your place. Class schedules depend on the availability of the instructors. Fly Fishing Trips provides detailed information on Fly Fishing Flies, Fly Fishing Gear, Fly Fishing Knots, Fly Fishing Reels and more. Wedding Planning Binder and Checkilsts

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

By Chris Ryerson A wedding is such a wonderful event and a big day in any new couples life together. It will hopefully be the start of a life long partnership between husband and wife. However, since many couples planning a wedding have little to no experience in event coordination and planning things can quickly become disastrous. The details of florists, priests, caterers, decorations and many other such details can quickly become overwhelming and almost choke out any fun that might be had. Don’t let this happen to you, don’t let your wedding become a nightmare of disorganized chaos in which you are rushing around so frantically that you won’t remember what happened. By following some simple wedding planning checklists and organization skills you can ensure that your wedding will be pulled off with class, grace and even be a fun carefree event that you can actually enjoy. There are many different ways to keep organized and everyone is individual and will want to do what works for them. However, one of the most universally used tools in wedding planning or even event planning is a wedding binder. A wedding binder is important because it will keep track of all the paperwork and details so that you are not scrambling around looking for these things. This does not need to be a fancy elaborate binder any three ring binder will work. Of course, there is nothing wrong with a little decoration and you will be using this binder on a daily basis so if you choose to purchase something with a little style that will work just fine also. 1. Site - In this section you can keep all of the details regarding both the site where the ceremony will be held and where the reception will be. You will want phone numbers and contact information for both of these sites along with directions or maps to the place. You will also want to keep any contracts and agreements that have been made in renting the site for the event. 2. Clothing - You will want to keep information in this section regarding everything about clothing. This includes information about your wedding dress, the bridesmaid dress and accessories and where the tuxedos for the groom, best man and so on. Make sure you have phone numbers and a contact person, brochures from the places if available. As well as maps or directions to the place for out of town or out of state visitors. You might also want to include photos of wedding clothing that you like to use as a sample when shopping. Colors for the wedding are also very important make sure you clearly layout and decide what colors are being used. 3. Decorations - Centerpieces, floral arrangements, table clothes, trinity candles and much more can go in this general category. Essentiality this category will contain any information about any type of decoration that will be used. 4. Ceremony - In this section you can include information on the offciant of the wedding, the location for the ceremony, music lists, maps, and programs 5. Reception - You will want to include any catering, food prep ideas, and site information including phone numbers and contact people. 6. Honeymoon - Hopefully you are planning a wonderful honeymoon vacation after the wedding. You might want to keep tickets, itineraries, email and phone numbers all in this section. Along with any brochures and other vacation options. 7. Photographers - This section is of course dedicated to photography. You will want to include contact information or a business card for photographers, and videographers. Keep your contracts and terms of agreements with photographers in here also. A binder can not solve all the problems and complications associated with planning a wedding. However by regularly using wedding planning checklists and a wedding planning binder and keep up with organizing the information you wedding will run smoother. Which means you will be able to enjoy the special occasion like it was meant to be. Chris Ryerson Plan Best Wedding. A great resource for: wedding Planning Checklists. Nostradennis - Prophecy Comes Alive in Our Time

Tuesday, July 17th, 2007

By Dennis Diehl These recently discovered prophecies of the 14th Century monk and mystic, Nostradennis of Greenville, are here presented for the first time. They were found in a mayonnaise jar on a shelf in the men’s room of an old monastery. Their uncanny references to present day circumstances are just short of astrounding. Who says Prophecy does not come alive in our time! “And behold shall a bush burn in the desert and many shall be perplexed and afraid that a bush could could speak and become a King of fierce countenance and big bucks. And betimes shall the season come when appointments by the people of men, most congressional shall be made, and it shall terrify the King of the West and vex him most sorely. Diebolt on de door shall he close and only those of the King shall be accepted, though their end seem near. And in the time when the Witch of November be blowin, shall the King bring forth vexations of spirit to the people so that appointments by the people of men most congressional shall not be for now. Postponements shall abound along with wickedness most foul. A code of Red shall the King most fierce declare upon the people and the Eagle shall smell a rat, though the rat shall yet live for yet a time, times and some more time. And the people of the King of the West shall languish and cry bwaaaa, bwaaa, bwaaa unto the King and shall hear them not. ‘Please kill me not’ shall they utter but with scorn shall the bush burns in the desert mock them. Those that speak for the people shall say naught… And the King shall chuckle… And betimes after the great postponement of appointments by the people of men most congressional, shall arise, from the East, a Great Bird to infect the Eagle, though it be planned so to be. A great sickness shall come upon the Eagle, at the behest of Cardinals aflockin and the people shall be very ill. And the Eagle that flu so proudly shall flee to it’s home and wait till the sickness be past. This shall occur when the King of West shall near the end of his time come and yet not want it so to be. Code of Red shall he declare so that it be not that a new King can come. So he must yet abide a short time more. And the people shall pray that Thy new King can come, and their will be done, but it shall not be, for the Bush that burns shall declare it not time for New King Can Come and so it cometh not. And the people of the King of the West shall languish and cry bwaaa, bwaaa, bwaaaunto the King and he shall hear them not..nor shall he care for them betimes. Those that speak for the people yet naught shall say nor shall they defend the people from the King most fierce. And the King shall chuckle and prosper… And with codes of yellow, orange and red shall the King beguile the people make them oft afeared. For in afearness shall the power of the King lie. And the King, with clothes most new, as of an Emperor shall utterly fail betimes. Those who Rove in the desert of bushes that burn shall also fail betimes and condi-mints shall not be found on beds made wherein the King must now lie. And then comes the end when the people shall see salvation most needed. The Eagle shall once again to her senses come and fly not flu, nor of other birds that flu be afeared. The cardinal, yeah truely, not even peckers of wood shall torment the Eagle and she shall be free. And the people shall not cry bwaa, bwaa, bwaaa again no more forever, from where the sun now stands. And they will rise again on eagles wings and be free And those that spoke not for the people shall repent of her sins and of the people beg forgiveness. And men of congress, shall be of and for the people once again. Exterminator and terminators shall not prosper, nor shall liars rule the people. And the King of the West, when inquiry shall be made of the poopage he hath caused, shall say…”It be not my problem” as oft he spoke when ruler of parts south and west he gave up to be King. But behold, his problem it is and none shall his advice or counsel seek when to the private sector he is banished. For what can a King, who burned as a bush so badly in the desert and freedom most precious to the people mocked, do for us? For in the day we hire the ex-King, shall our profits languish and be false profits you betcha believe it. And the King of the West shall be no more a pox upon the sons of men. The Lion shall dwell with the Lamb and the little child shall lead them…Neither shall they learn war anymore…And common sense shall return a second time betimes again Thus let it be said..thus let it be written…thus shall it be..Amen.” I, Nostradennis on the River Saluda, do declare these things that must shortly come to pass. I drink not the fruit of the vine nor of any weed or mushroom partake, but have revealed for true what mine eye hath seen betimes and all my friends say “prophecy on dude.” Even so come…Amen again. Whoa……..is that not spooky? Nostradennis…a man ahead of his time! What is a Healthy Relationship?

Monday, July 16th, 2007

By Brooke Brimm Countless times individuals want to hold on to a love that is not healthy because many years have been invested. They say things like weve been together for all these years, why leave. Sometimes people stay in a bad relationship because it looks good to the outside world or because they are unsure what life would be like without their mate. However, deep inside their hearts they long to experience a truly fulfilling love. I held on to an unhealthy relationship for 7 years before I came to the realization that it was not worth it for me to hang on any longer. The first year was the good year and the rest were off and on, and filled with disrespect, dishonesty, and emotional abuse. I held on because we had one thing in common, and I thought it was enough to make a future. I honestly believed we loved each other, and that in the end we would marry. I was wrong, and once I began to experience real love I realized that for years I had held on to an empty dream. The term unhealthy relationship is thrown around so often by so many, that I feel compelled to explain what I mean by this term. I mean consistent destructive, abusive, disrespectful, unsupportive, uncaring, and demoralizing behavior. I mean the kind of deeds that make you feel anxious to take your partner around your friends and family, for fear of humiliation or embarrassment. I mean constant withdrawal and abandonment, and loveless actions and responses. What happens in an unhealthy relationship is not to be confused with the constant minor annoyances within a healthy relationship. Nor the brief phases that partners go through, which make them seem distance. There are aspects of love that do cause minor hurts and aggravations, but may not warrant leaving a gratifying relationship. We may not like it or even admit it, but love can hurt. We are imperfect beings, so we tend to have personality issues, which we bring into every relationship we have with other imperfect beings. The result is often minor bickering, power struggles, and hurt feelings. However, mature adults who see value in their relationships talk over these problems and eventually work them out. They usually become closer and develop a keen sense of understanding. There is a difference between an unhealthy relationship and a healthy relationship with normal human clashing. If you are unsure of the kind of relationship or friendship you are in, evaluate it, and pray for discernment. Ask yourself these few questions: Does this person have my best interest at heart more often than not? Does this person have positive things to say to me more often than not? Am I proud to have others see my relationship with this person? Does this person forgive me easily when I mess up? Does this person show me genuine love? Do I feel valued in this relationship? Do I smile and laugh when I am with this person? Am I supported in this relationship even when I am silly, angry, unhappy, insecure, or sad? Do I feel free to be myself around this person? Would others think this person abuses me? If you find that you are in a relationship or a friendship that is not healthy for you, dont be afraid to move on. Dont think you can change the other person, just go. To linger longer than you should will only drain you and could possibly make you bitter. Refuse to be used, abused, hurt, misunderstood, and degraded. Know that something or someone better is out there for you. If you find that your relationships and friendships are fulfilling, but have small issues, keep working at it. Keep talking it out, and keep being honest and open. We all have issues to work through, and as a result experience relationship struggles. We can work it out if we keep working at it. You Have to Probe Deeper: Why First Impressions Are Dangerous

Saturday, July 14th, 2007

By Azriel Winnett Do you remember when, as a small child at a birthday party, you sat wide-eyed and gaping as a magician pulled out a rabbit with a flourish from a seemingly empty top hat? At the time, the wonder of it all left you speechless and full of awe, but like all healthy children, you grew a little wiser as you grew a little older. The next time you were present at such a performance, the “magician” might have turned into a “conjurer.” You might have enjoyed the show every bit as much, but you now knew that sleight of hand, not black magic, was the name of the game. It’s a great pity that when we finally emerge into adulthood, we tend to forget what we learned about those crafty conjurers who entertained us in our youth. Yes, our intellects may have matured greatly over the years. But for all that, we don’t draw enough on our youthful understanding of the “sleight of hand” concept to make further logical distinctions along the same lines. More specifically, and simply put, we often don’t appreciate enough that things are not always what they’re cracked up to be! The end result is that we fall prone to a kind of mental laziness that allows us to accept everything that bombards our senses at face value, without probing deeper. At times, we may even regress so much that we are still viewing life’s events as the small child views his first magician show. It’s not only little toddlers at birthday parties whose mind’s are deceived. If you’re at all human (and who isn’t), it may happen to you almost very day. A woman was once riding on a subway train when six exceptionally boisterous children burst into the carriage and plunked themselves down on a seat near her. Almost automatically, the woman cringed. She wondered how she would survive the rest of the journey. Then a few seconds later a gentleman stepped into the coach, trudged in a rather lethargic manner over to the children, and sighing deeply, sat down next to them. The woman relaxed a little. He must be their father, and undoubtedly he would keep the young brats in order. But to her consternation, the five kids didn’t let up in their wild exuberance for a second. They continued to jump up and down and race around the coach, yelling their little lungs out all the while, while the father just sat there in almost a trance-like state, as if deep in a meditation exercise. Finally, our lady passenger could tolerate this no longer. She went over to the father and berated him in the strongest language she could command for not exerting himself to control his insufferable children. “Yes, you’re right,” he acknowledged very softly, his voice almost choking. “They really should behave with more consideration. We’re just now returning from the hospital, where their mother died two hours ago…” This widespread human failing - of neglecting to look below the surface - is the root cause of much of the misery that people inflict both on themselves and upon others. It leads to hasty judgments and overly superficial evaluations that wreak havoc with all kinds of social relationships. The inclination to pass hasty judgment on the actions of our peers is indeed an all too human one. Inevitably it leads to feelings of resentment and other powerful emotions, none of which are too good for either our physical or emotional health. More significantly, our tendency to jump to conclusions must obviously lead to negative consequences regarding our relationship with the person or people concerned. This is especially true when our suspicions turn out to be unfounded, or the people had valid reasons for behaving as they did. And this happens more frequently than any of us would care to admit. We forget that we are often in a position of someone who starts a novel at chapter three! Practical exercises So what are we going to do about it? Each one of us is as human as the next person. Can we really change our inborn natures? Yes, we certainly can! Surely nothing worthwhile comes easy, but change is well within our ability. And I can prove it to you. Do you know how? When it comes to judging our own selves, we all suddenly have a remarkable capacity to judge favorably. When we are say, late for an appointment or forget to keep a promise, we’re usually not slow in finding excuses for ourselves. After all, we have so much on our mind or are working under such stress. (Of course, when another does the same to us, we find no justification for such rudeness, ingratitude or inconsideration!) And if we can be lenient with ourselves, we can train ourselves to be lenient with others as well. It’s a matter of practice - analogous to excercising a weak muscle to strengthen it. We can kill the habit of looking only at the surface by training ourselves to give our family, friends and colleagues the benefit of the doubt, in all sorts of situations that come up in daily life. Here are a couple of examples: You arrange to meet your friend downtown for coffee at a certain time. You wait and wait, but she doesn’t show up. From the window during the bus journey home, you see her strolling casually down the street. The expected phone call of apology also doesn’t materialize. Think of possible valid reasons for your friend’s seemingly inexplicable conduct. Perhaps she misunderstood the date or time you arranged? Perhaps what looked like a casual stroll from the fast moving bus was really a rush to an emergency? Perhaps her phone is out of order? You have an ongoing ailment and you have to report weekly at the clinic for a certain medical test. Usually, the nurse in charge hands you the result on the spot. This time, a new nurse is on duty. She declines to tell you the result, citing official policy that only a doctor can give it to you at a prearranged appointment. You’re fuming, because you know no one gives a hoot for official policy at this clinic. Consider that this time the test result might not be exactly what you were hoping it would be, but the nurse wasn’t sure whether she was interpreting it correctly. Perhaps she had been loathe to upset you - possibly for nothing - until she had checked with the doctor. More likely than not, this is what actually happened! A final tip: here’s one technique to help you feel positive even to people who annoy you. When somebody does something that makes you mad, don’t start cursing or thinking to yourself “What a horrible pest!” Close your eyes for a moment, either physically or mentally. Try to imagine that person as a baby. Conjure up in your mind an image of that person’s mother, taking up that baby in her arms with feelings of joy and unqualified love. Now, close your eyes tighter and try to feel a little bit of that love. Azriel Winnett is creator of Hodu.com - Your Communication Skills Portal.
